Germersheim town and fortress museum Germersheim

Ludwig Gate, Home of the Town and fortress museum

In the museum, you can see an impressive collection on an area larger than 1500 square metres (43 exhibition rooms), and so it is one of the biggest in the Germersheim region.

The museum documents the history of the town, but also of the erstwhile fortress and the garrison.

The fact that Germersheim had been long borne the stamp of the military is manifested in the numerous exhibits such as uniforms, military equipment and maps.

There is also a very impressive replica of the fortress, which clearly shows the Neo-Prussian system.

Besides that, civilian activities are shown as well, e.g. brick manufacture, professional fishing on the Rhine, tobacco manufacture, schnapps distillation, bootmaking, printing and bookbinding, as well as enamel plate production, which had been based in Germersheim for a long time. The two antique, but fully functional, church clocks are also very interesting.
